36 miles to go. Very low wind out of the north-norhtwest today. We're sure hoping it's not in this direction when it's time to go from Provincetown to Gloucester. The wind was right on our back the whole way. Since it was such a light wind, we sailed most of the way to plymouth with the sails wing and wing.
Day 2: Plymouth to Provincetown

It's pretty much... east to provincetown. We had a north wind (still) coming over the beam which is our most preferred wind direction. However it was still a pretty soft wind. We started out with best intentions to sail all the way, although as would be the case every day of this trip, the wind really softened up in the middle (hot) part of the day.
Day 4: Provincetown to Gloucester... er make that Scituate

(What about Day 3? we played Tourist in Provincetown and stayed a second night there)

The weak north-northwest wind continued today. We got underway from Provincetown at 5:30AM to give enough time for the trip to Gloucester but it quickly became obvious that we couldn't make it. The highest we could point was taking us way off course. Plan B was to point as high as possible and get to the edge of of the Stellwagen bank so we might see some whales and then turn west to Scituate.

As we headed north from Provincetown, the wind started moving a bit westerly but it was too weak and too late to make it to Gloucester. We did our westerly tack and within about an hour the wind totally died. Once again, there were hours on the engine to come.

Approaching Scituate Harbor on a very hot afternoon with no wind.

Scituate - roughly translated into modern English means "Don't spend any money here". The first inkling of this comes at the harbormaster. He'll only accept cash for the transient slip. Yay - let's walk to an ATM and back and spend an extra $2 penalty fee. I'm sure most transient guests carry wads of cash around while boating. Sheesh. He charged us $3/foot for the slip which is typical. It would have been nice if the slip itself was at least half as long as the boat! I wished I could have paid by the foot for the slip length instead.

We did find a great restaurant for dinner. On the way we spotted a place called Phins which had breakfast hours starting at 7AM. The next morning, we got up and about and were lusting for a good breakfast at Phins. Well... we got to Phins and found door locked, lights out, and a sign on the door saying "Closed, be back at 7:00". It was 7:45. So began our odyssey to find breakfast. It was already in the 90s, we had no water with us and we both had to pee. After-all, we were only walking a block to Phins. We asked a few people where we could go and amazingly no one had any idea where one could buy breakfast in Scituate except for... Phins. We ended up walking the mile along the harbor looking for someplace to eat. Nothing... We did notice a bakery/cafe place which we figured would at least have coffee and muffins but when we got there, it was "open" alright, but nobody was inside (including employees) and even the coffee makers were not switched on. What a bizarre town!

As we got ready to leave Scituate, we noticed the flags blowing from exactly the direction of Boston. Being only 17 miles or so, we were determined to try to actually sail the whole leg this time even if it meant heading far off-course from Boston and doing one large tack.

It started out as pretty nice sailing. Not thrilling but not too slow either. As the hours went by, we found the wind lifting us toward Boston. If it held up, we wouldn't need to tack at all. But, like the previous 4 days, it got very hot in the mid afternoon and the wind died. We had to do about the last 5 miles under motor.

By the time we got in around the Boston Harbor Islands, we were so hot, we needed to go for a swim. So we grabbed a mooring off of George's island and cooled off for a bit.

Fujin is now moored in her new home at Cottage Park in Winthrop, MA.

The original plan was to sail for 4 days:
May 5: Newport to Cuttyhunk Island (about 20 miles)
May 6: Cuttyhunk to Onset, MA (about 25 miles)
May 7: Onset, MA to Plymouth, MA (about 32 miles)
May 8: Plymouth, MA to Winthrop. (about 35 miles)

Leaving Newport. From 2010-may-fujin

We watched the weather carefully and it sounded like we really wanted to not be sailing on Saturday May 8. So on day 1 we made a big push to get all the way to Onset, MA at the mouth of the canal. We arrived there about 5:30 and they let us spend the night at the fuel dock. We got the number of a 24hr cab company and so were able to enjoy the Onset Night Life (he says sarcastically).
On May 6, we woke up to dense fog and some pretty scary sounding weather forecasts on the VHF for Cape Cod bay.
New Plan
About the only option we had was to make it through the canal and just wait it out on the Cape Cod side at Sandwich, MA. Our window to enter the canal began at about 10Am and fortunately most of the fog lifted by then. So we were able to hit the canal at a pretty good time and get a nice push from the current. It was nice to barely rev the engine and still do 9 kts.
Sandwich, Please
After an amazingly short trip through the canal, Sandwich marina comes up on our right. It's interesting taking a right turn out of that canal current in howling wind... but we made it and the friendly staff helped us tie up. We did scrape the doc a little harder than we would have liked but no harm done.

We had not much to do for the rest of that day so we took a walk to the town. We happened to pass a "Boat Canvas" shop and went inside. We met a very friendly fellow named Jim Macurdy. We asked him if he could do the modification to our sail cover for the Lazyjack lines. Not only could he, but he showed up at our dock about an hour later with a marker and walked off with our sail cover. Another hour later he returned and we had our professionally modified cover back on the boat.
Day 3
Ideally we wanted to make it all the way home from Sandwich because of the nasty forecast for Saturday. This meant about a 60 mile trip so Linda set the alarm for 4:45Am. We cast off from the dock at about 5:20 and hit the last 1/4 mile of the Canal when the current was at about half its max.

Heading out of the canal into the sunrise over Cape Cod Bay. From 2010-may-fujin

Once we got out in Cape Cod Bay the wind really picked up so we attempted to reduce sail and get things a bit under control. We needed the engine to push us directly into the wind so we could reef the main and furl in some of the jib.

Uh Oh
Linda reported a slight problem with the Engine.... as in... it won't GO. True enough, we had no forward or reverse gear. We have since thought of the catastrophe this would have been if it happened 20 minutes earlier when we were in the canal. Ok, I don't even want to think about it.

I opened up all the engine covering expecting to see the transmission linkage cable broken or damaged. The problem was much more serious and easier to diagnose. The coupling between transmission and prop shaft had come un-bolted. There was about 10" of nothing between them.

The transmission output shaft disc and prop shaft disc not bolted together. From 2010-may-fujin

The prop shaft side had two of the bolts sill in, and I eventually found the other two under the engine. With the boat slowed down enough, it was possible for me to pull the prop shaft to get it in contact with the transmission shaft. I bolted them back together without feeler gauges or torque wrenches as best I could. That got us home at least.

Made good time
Despite our near catastrophe (did I mention how much this would have sucked if it happened in the canal?), we got our sails set right and took advantage of a really nice breeze off the coast of southern MA.

No stop at Plymouth
As we approached Plymouth, we had to make the call whether to stop or proceed home. We decided that a potential night entry into Winthrop harbor was better than a 36 mile sail in freezing rain and thunderstorms on Saturday so we went for it.

About then the wind got flaky going from strong to nothing every few minutes and switching directions on us. We found ourselves motor-sailing through the lulls. We've definitely learned that this boat has great performance sailing into the wind.
It was like sending a child away from home in a way. The shed at Bristol Marine is the place where this ship was built (and the yard where it was re-built). Fujin will remain in Newport until early May when we'll bring her to Boston Harbor.

We hope to return her to Bristol again someday for cruising or perhaps winter storage.

There were still a few things to wrap up before cast-off from Bristol so we didn't get moving until almost 2PM. Newport is about a 12 mile trip.

Pre-launch preparations in Bristol

Never dull
We started out in very light wind with both sails up full. Fujin got moving about 4-5 kts even so.

About as soon as we got out of inner Bristol Harbor, we got into some stiff breeze and we had our hands full. It was definitely time to reef the sails.

It all goes wrong...
First we reefed the genoa. As I was furling it in, the knot attaching the port sheet to the sail let loose. That's the first time a bowline I tied ever came apart. So we completely furled the genoa leaving us with only an extremely over-powered main.

On my way to the mast to reef the main, I looked to see if the reefing line was attached well to the main sail. Uh... the reefing line... yes uh... whooops.... we never attached the reefing line!

The task...
The reefing line runs inside the full length of the boom, through a pulley at the rear of the boom, and up to a ring in the main sail. So all we had to do was feed a rope through 16 feet of boom and around a pulley on a boat that's heaving all over the place in heavy wind.

We snaked it through the boom using a metal tape measure and electrical tape (holy McGiver, Batman!) A few minutes later we had a more or less (mostly less) proper reefing line and we dropped the main to the reef point and things got much more under control.

Two ships passing
We were sailing along just fine with only our reefed main. We were very happy with how well the boat performed in this configuration. The wind was directly out of the south (the exact direction we were going) so we wanted to point as high as possible and we were able to do so quite well.

About then, we see this Hunter 41 heading toward us. The skipper is waving his hands and yelling something at us. Oh SNAP! now what? He took a turn and came up along side of us. It was Rob from Bristol Marine just saying hello! Of course he had to also point out how crappy our reefed main looked.

More Steam
Between leaving late and our little catastrophe, we were running a little late. Our neighbors from Arlington drove down to move our car from Bristol to Newport and they were already in Newport waiting for us. We were still about 4 or 5 miles away. It was time to fire up the diesel so we could head directly into the wind and get there. It was too bad because had that strong wind been 30 degrees more west, we could have really flown.
